Graduate Feature: Esther Chin

Dr. Esther Chin is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist and Assistant Clinical Professor (Adjunct) at McMaster University. She completed medical school and residency at McMaster. She is the Global Health Lead of the Department of Ob/Gyn at McMaster and is delighted to have joined UBC’s Global Surgery Lab as a Principal Investigator. She is also a Content Consultant for the Global Surgery Lab’s Essential Surgical Skills Curriculum which is currently in its second iteration in South Sudan.

She has previously worked in rural Rwanda, Uganda, Zimbabwe, and Guatemala. She returned from Angola in January where she underwent training in the repair of obstetric fistula. She is excited to continue a number of research projects pertaining to obstetric fistula and Global Surgery curricula while simultaneously advancing the objectives of health equity through institutional partnerships, teaching, and advocacy.

The MGSC has facilitated an understanding of the constellation of factors that conspire to create or perpetuate barriers to surgical care. Cognizant of the interconnectedness of both systems-level and granular issues, she hopes that her work in obstetric fistula, maternal morbidity/mortality, medical/surgical education, and capacity building will help to address crucial components of surgical care systems in the context of Obstetrics/Gynecology.
