Each 3-credit course is delivered completely online over a period of 12 weeks. Courses are designed to bring different and complementary essential aspects that provide depth and breadth to the subject. Students will research journal articles, view videos, complete course-specific tasks and assignments as well as engage in facilitated online discussion forums.
Individual Courses
The following courses can be taken as an independent* student:
- SURG 510 – Surgical Care in International Health
- SURG 517 – Clinical Research Methods for Surgical Procedures with Global Surgical Comparisons
*Any student not in the GCGSC or MGSC programs wishing to take this graduate course must submit an application package to BGSC and be a UBC Student in one of the following categories:
- Resident (year 3 as of July) PGY-3 and above from one of the BGSC Member Departments, Faculty of Medicine;
- Fellow from one of the BGSC Member Departments, Faculty of Medicine;
- Graduate student enrolled in the School of Nursing, Faculty of Applied Science;
- Graduate student who is a part of the Engineers in Scrubs (EiS) program, Faculty of Applied Science;
- Graduate student enrolled in the BGSC Graduate Certificate in Global Surgical Care (GCGSC) or Master of Global Surgical Care (MGSC) program, Faculty of Medicine
Non-UBC students wishing to take SURG 510 or SURG 517 are to apply as an unclassified student through UBC Non-Degree Studies by the deadline of June 15th to be admitted for September. Please see information on Non-Degree Studies application here. Applicants must also submit an application package to BGSC.
GCGSC Courses
The following courses can be taken as a GCGSC student:

- SURG 512 – Global Disability: A Surgical Care Mandate
- SURG 514 – Surgical Care in Humanitarian Disaster Response
- SURG 516 – Program Planning and Evaluation in Surgical Care Low Resource Settings
*Note that GCGSC students may take SURG 517 as an additional course if they wish, but it cannot be used to substitute one of the above four core courses.
