Graduate Feature: Andrew Lawe

Andrew Lawe is a general surgeon at a regional centre in the West Kootenay Region of the British Columbia interior. He learned a great deal during the GCGSC courses and hope to use what he has learned soon in low-resource settings. He has also found that the modules have expanded his knowledge of where public health intersects with surgical care. He appreciated the higher-level framework, especially as it relates to program planning and evaluation, understanding disaster relief efforts, and treatment of disabling impairments. It was a steep learning curve, but the modular structure kept him on track, and online interactions were valuable opportunities to review the readings with others. He would highly recommend the certificate program to any surgeon or surgical trainee with an interest in global surgery and related concerns.
