
Please join us in extending sincere thanks and gratitude for Dr. Norgrove Penny’s contributions to the Branch for Global Surgical Care over the years. He has been instrumental in helping guide our learners on their understanding of alleviating the global burden of surgical disability.
Dr. Penny is a Canadian Orthopaedic surgeon, and a member of the Pediatric Orthopaedics Society of North America (POSNA).
Dr. Penny’s current practice concentrates on the treatment of children and adolescents. Dr. Penny is a Clinical Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the UBC. He is former head of the division of paediatric surgery for Vancouver Island, helping coordinate surgical services with acute interventional services such as the Paediatric ICU, and he is a board member of the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island.
Dr. Penny has had a long term interest in global orthopaedics. He worked for six years in Uganda setting up a children’s orthopaedic rehabilitation program and now consults in developing countries around the world. He works in advisory positions for non-governmental organizations involved in orthopaedic training and clinical care in some of the world’s poorest countries. He is an Overseas Fellow of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA). He has a particular clinical interest in the orthopaedic care of children in austere environments.
In 2007, Dr. Penny was awarded the Order of Canada by Governor General, Her Excellency Michael Jéan, for services to humanity
Dr. Penny created and instructed our graduate course SURG 512- Global Disability: A Surgical Care Mandate for twelve years, since the course launch in 2012, along with Dr, Dan Poenaru, and later with Dr. Esther Chin and Dr. Doreen Nakku who are now co-instructing the course.
